Understanding How Dogs Communicate

It's been a while since I've shared.

It was a good morning to get up a little extra early...to go for a nice stroll in the park with the dog. The mist blanketed the ground. It was simply breathtaking. And Finn carried his toy bumper proudly.

Today was particularly interesting because we encountered a dog that was off-leash which proceeded to escalate their encounter. I wondered what they were saying to each other. What propels dogs to fight? Finn, fortunately, stood his ground, his hackles on alert but managed to recover as if whatever just happened didn't matter to him. He is just a year old and is a pure and gentle being. The other dog seemed nervous and was scolded by his owner. He then apologized for his dog's expected behavior; we accepted the apology, and moved on.

I read about Turid Rugaas just short of a year ago when I first started inquiring about dogs and their fascinating language. Before panicking and stopping a dog fight, it may help to stay calm, KEEPING THE LEASH LOOSE and just let the dogs work it out:
Calming Signals Community: The Wonderful World of Dog Language

Let's just hope that when we encounter this same dog in the park, Finn and I will stand our ground and be calm once more as ambassadors to the human and canine world.
