The Never Ending Search for the Holy Grail of Dog Food
We have actually run out of Finnegan's Volhard NDF2 so beginning yesterday, I started following the recipe as suggested in the Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog to prepare the Volhard Natural Diet. It is actually not that grueling. However, I certainly suggest not preparing the meal when one is exhausted for it's quite easy to mix up the measurements and ingredients.
For those of you who are still searching for the proper food to feed your beloved canine, consider the ingredients that are listed in the labels. Avoid fillers and simplify with healthy ingredients. Fillers are used because they add volume and they cost less for the pet food company. It is for this reason, I feed a natural diet. It is empowering. I know what I am putting into it and with this advantage, I can take out the ingredients that may not agree with my dog if needed.
I have begun to learn that my dog can tell me what ingredient in the meal is rancid or not fit for consumption. As a side, just during the months of June and July, I was dealing with a dog which rejected the raw ground beef that I purchased from a reputable grocery store. I had to throw away all the beef and had to replace it with ground bison which the dog ate. Something was not right though. The dog loved eating beef and feeding during those times seemed miserable and I couldn't figure out why the dog was not eating. I learned that Whole Foods had expanded its voluntary recall fresh ground beef to other states including Ohio.

It's funny, my dad used to remind when I was a very young girl, "It's best to KISS - Keep it Simple Stupid." There is something validating about it when it comes to my approach of feeding our Finn.
